This is a folded steel pattern, perfect for your weapon designs, I used it for my sword projects. As for the apparent "tile effect" that's just what damascus steel pattern look like, also, if you take a closer look, you'll find none of the patterns repeating, all similar but slightly different ;) My personal favourite is the third variation.
